Our Motivation for Simulation-Based Engineering
In an era of advancing digitalization in the industrial sector, simulation is one of our core areas of focus— serving as a bridge between disciplines. However, our experience shows that perceptions of the simulation of real machines and systems vary widely.
What does simulation in the field of automation mean for us as the ROTH company?
Interested customers have often asked whether our simulation is simply a kind of video. This is a valid question, since the visualization of our virtual systems shows only a moving 3D model. Essentially, only the tip of the iceberg is visible here; the most important aspects remain (for now) hidden. In machine and plant simulation, the actual intelligence is implemented through an underlying, invisible behavioral model that is brought to life through direct integration with real or virtual control systems and replicates the actual plant behavior.
We create these virtual systems as part of our simulation-based engineering process, in parallel with traditional disciplines such as mechanical design, electrical hardware design, and software development. The visualization in the 3D model ultimately represents the visible result of this development work across ALL individual disciplines.
What are the benefits of simulation in automation?

The use of simulation technology during the development process of an automation system makes the final result tangible even at an early stage of the project. The resulting simulation models serve as a virtual test environment for our software development and, at the same time, provide a basis for discussion with our customers. Directly linking the control system to the simulation model enables virtual commissioning regardless of the availability of the actual system. This allows us to thoroughly and comprehensively test the ROTH control software in-house using the digital counterpart of the actual system. Virtual commissioning has numerous positive effects on our project execution, resulting in higher software quality and shorter on-site commissioning times. Especially in the current climate, this approach allows us to continue ensuring on-time project delivery despite the unique external challenges we face.
