Plant overhauls, retrofits, and sustainability are more relevant than ever. We support you in these areas with our 35 years of expertise in automation technology.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SINUMERIK is one of the cornerstones of our company\u2019s founding. Our passion is\u2014and always has been\u2014to combine tradition and innovation. Over the past year, we\u2019ve had the opportunity to bring a few S5 systems back up to speed. This was a special highlight for our senior partner, Bernd Roth.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked him to share some behind-the-scenes insights.  <br\/>Just recently, a customer called us to say that his system had come to a standstill. At first glance, this isn\u2019t unusual and isn\u2019t really a problem if you speak the same \u201clanguage\u201d as the control system.<br\/>Who still remembers the S5? Our senior manager, Bernd Roth, knows it like the back of his hand\u2014and all its quirks. For those who aren\u2019t familiar with it\u2014the S5 is a control system that hasn\u2019t been manufactured since 1995 but is still in use at many facilities.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read Bernd Roth&#8217;s first-hand account here\u2014it&#8217;s essentially a guide for our young students  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Instructions for an S5 Project<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you&#8217;re called to an S5 facility that&#8217;s relatively unfamiliar to you, the process always begins with a period of concentration.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>1.) Have you packed everything?<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Connection cable to the PLC controller  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connection Cable to CNC Controller  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connection cable to the controller&#8217;s serial interface  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RAM memory in case an EPROM is installed  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EPROM eraser so you can erase the EPROM at the end  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A replacement CD so that the customer can have a backup at the end  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the programmer is newer\u2014an external floppy drive, in case the only backup is a 5\u00bd-inch floppy disk stored in a cabinet  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data backup from our office\u2014if available. After all, the floppy disk in the closet is usually less up-to-date than the one we have here\u2014or, as often happens, it\u2019s no longer readable (manufacturer-guaranteed shelf life: 2 years).   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>2.) If you haven&#8217;t packed everything, you&#8217;re going back home!<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No quick phone call\u2014because no one else who knows their way around is there besides you  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And our support guy\u2014Nicolas was still in kindergarten back in the S5 days  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No Internet\u2014the programming device does not support this technology (Windows 3.1 or earlier) or definitely does not have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There&#8217;s no way to have a program sent to you right away  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No replacement cable from the customer&#8217;s maintenance department  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>3.) Once you&#8217;re on site and have identified the control system (most of the time, it turns out not to be exactly as described over the phone), the next step requires your full attention:<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What was that about ONLINE?  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What could be the cause if the red light on the CPU is on?  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can I just quickly turn off the control system? Or would I run the risk of losing data if I did that?   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>4.) Now let&#8217;s start up the PG and try our luck.  <\/em><\/strong><br\/><strong><em>Consolidation Process Number Three:<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The beautiful program\u2014designed entirely in blue or green\u2014offers no help  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let&#8217;s press F1\u2014after all, that&#8217;s what F1 was originally intended to be. A unique, additional key with a freely assignable function.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No\u2014so it wasn&#8217;t F1. Once we reached F4, we saw the configuration menu.   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You don&#8217;t even need to activate the computer mouse in the first place. That only works if the developer thought it was necessary. The solution is a keyboard shortcut. It helps to have a good long-term memory.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then you try a few things, and eventually something loads\u2026.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>5.) Eventually, you&#8217;ll reach a point where you&#8217;re standing in front of the system and can ask:<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What was the problem with the three-phase motor?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In summary  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We moved both systems. Everything was still working on both of them.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the move, we both turned it back on  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At that point, only one or the other wasn&#8217;t working anymore  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then we swapped the two EPROMs (I would never have thought of that until then)  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Then, sure enough, the other one\u2014the good one\u2014stopped working  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So, Roth, there must be something wrong with the EPROM.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just make us two identical EPROMs and everything will be fine  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ll now summarize the process I used to try to do this:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read EPROM 1  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read EPROM 2  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compare Files  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to explain the differences  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And those differences were so significant\u2014yet logical\u2014that I strongly doubt the accuracy of the data from those same EPROMs  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All right, whatever\u2014so:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Erase the EPROM,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close the EPROM  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start the program. This process takes about 2 minutes on the S7.<br\/>On the S5, it takes about 1 hour\u2014with my heart pounding, because:   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The original EPROM has been erased  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will the erasure and burning process still work 30 years from now?  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does it work the other way around, too\u2014if nothing works at all?  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, it worked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n    <div class=\"wp-block-visual4-keyword-teaser v4-keyword-teaser alignwide  alignwide\">\r\n\r\n
