Compliance will be mandatory starting December 11, 2027\u2014and the penalties are substantial. Those who fail to act now risk fines of up to 15 million euros.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Cyber Resilience Act?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cyber Resilience Act (EU) 2024\/2847 requires manufacturers to securely develop, test, and deploy products with digital components. This applies to control systems, machines, equipment, PLC systems, and industrial software\u2014in short, to anything with a network connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Characteristic<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Details<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Effective Date: Manufacturer Obligations<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td>December 11, 2027<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Reporting Deadline<\/strong><\/td><td>September 11, 2026<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Applies to<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td>All products with digital elements (PDEs)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Penalties<\/strong><\/td><td>Up to \u20ac15 million or 2.5% of global annual revenue<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Reference Standard<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td>IEC 62443<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is covered by the CRA?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CRA applies to all products with digital elements that are made available on the EU market and have a direct or indirect data connection to a device or network. Specifically, this applies to: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Control Systems (PLC) with Network Connectivity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Machines and systems with embedded software or remote access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Firmware and Embedded Systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industrial Software (SCADA, MES, HMI Software)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switches, Firewalls, and Routers in Industrial Environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short: If your product has or can have a network connection\u2014directly or indirectly\u2014it falls under the CRA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What, specifically, do manufacturers need to do?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic Cybersecurity Requirements (Effective December 2027)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Released with no known exploitable vulnerabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure Default Configuration (Security by Default)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protecting the Confidentiality and Integrity of Data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimizing the attack surface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automatic Security Updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vulnerability Management<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Document vulnerabilities and components (including Software Bill of Materials \/ SBOM)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Address vulnerabilities immediately and provide free security updates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct regular security tests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cybersecurity Product Lifecycle Management System (CPLMS)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Implementing CRA requirements calls for clear responsibilities and well-established processes throughout the entire product lifecycle. In particular, a CPLMS defines: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Roles and Responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Governance and Approval Processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaboration Between Development, Quality Management, Service, and IT Security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidelines for Maintaining Technical Documentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The continuous monitoring and improvement of cybersecurity processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note: The <\/strong>CRA does not explicitly require a CPLMS. However, it is difficult to implement the required processes in a sustainable manner without an appropriate management system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reporting Requirements \u2013 Effective as Early as September 11, 2026!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reporting requirements will take effect more than a year before the other CRA requirements. Manufacturers must report actively exploited vulnerabilities and serious security incidents: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>24 hours after becoming aware: first early warning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>72 hours: Full report of the incident<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Day 14: Final Report<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who hasn&#8217;t yet established processes for this needs to take action now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Penalties for Noncompliance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CRA is no paper tiger. Significant penalties may be imposed: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Failure to comply with essential CRA requirements: up to 15 million euros or 2.5% of global annual revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing false information to government agencies: up to 5 million euros or 1% of annual revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Products That Do Not Comply with CRA: Market Access Will Be Restricted or Prohibited<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What You Should Do Now<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Impact Analysis: Which of your products are subject to the CRA?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gap Analysis: How do your current processes differ from the new requirements?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporting Requirements: Do you have processes in place for reporting security incidents?
