Axle Machining in Italy

A brand-new facility for machining railroad axles is being built in Italy. The new products in the new production line are characterized by their heavy weight and complex inspection procedures; in addition, 100% part traceability is required.
The entire railway axle machining line is controlled by the Siemens Sinumerik 840D control system—from controlling the gantries to the end-machining or finishing of the axles. Using various inspection machines (ultrasonic, magnetic particle, etc.) allow the required inspection procedures to be carried out and ensure high production quality. The heavy production parts are transported throughout the entire facility primarily by grippers. To ensure that no part is lost, active part tracking is implemented via a connection to the customer’s main computer and its order management system.
